Jimmy Nevis is headlining this year’s Pre #SummerExperience party brought to you by Big Dreamer Events and Good Hope FM. We caught up with him to find out where he is, artistically, at the moment and what we can expect:
BCTC: Last year you performed at the Summer Experience 2012 when your singles has first been released. Since then you’ve become a South African favourite. How do you feel returning to the event now that you’ve achieved so much success?
JN: I think it’s amazing. It feels great to know that South Africa has taken to my sound and my vibe. I am really loved and I feel that everyday.
BCTC: To be honest, when I first heard you I thought you were a white guy! You’ve created such an international sound for yourself. What influenced you to create “neutral” music opposed to playing on the more typical South African sound?
JN: Just being true to myself. I grew up in Athlone but went to schools in Pinelands so I’ve always been exposed to different styles of music. I was just being me.
BCTC: What’s your favourite kind of gig? Are you into hundreds of screaming girls or do you prefer a smaller environment?
JN: Both have their pros and cons. I think bigger stages are nice because they are filled with adrenaline and hype, whereas the intimate shows are vocally more comfortable and relaxed.
BCTC: What’s been your favourite gig so far where you felt that your music was being received in the most accurate way?
JN: My own private shows. I enjoy doing my own thing, getting to perform other songs off my album. It’s great to hear people sing along to those tunes.
BCTC: Any words for those who have never seen you live before, who will be attending your gig for the first time?
JN: They won’t be disappointed. It’s something real.
