Mariah Carey LIVE in Cape Town

You might be wondering why a rock n roll/electronic music lover like myself is posting about Mariah Carey, but I’m also a HUGE pop fan and Mariah Carey was one of the first I ever got into! Back in 1994 and I was just a youngin, hanging around my parents’ garden doing gymnastics, building forts and playing garden cricket. After years of a solid hard rock and classic pop background, it was my junior school needlework class that introduced me to urban sounds. The Now tape (no CDs) with Vanessa Williams’s Save the Best for Last, Jon Secada’s Just Another Day and Technotronic’s Pump up the Jam was rapidly being replaced by Boys II Men, Shaggy, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.

Off to school I’d go, in the small Namibian town I grew up in, where needlework was a subject. Our teacher was a strange, large, heavy breathing Afrikaans women, who happened to think I was the worst needleworker on the planet. She wasn’t wrong. Considering I would half all the numbers on my knitting pattern to reduce the work I needed to do, which resulted in all my dolls coming out like Quasimodo, my creations were pretty terrible. Whenever she’d go around the class asking everyone how they were getting on, she would say, “Anne, fine, you know what you’re doing. Jann, fine, you know what you’re doing. Carmen, fine, know what you’re doing. Megan, you cope?” “Yes Miss.” Another day, another Quasimodo. But to her credit, she allowed us to listen to urban music in her classroom. Class by class we’d sing away to Down on Bended Knee, Oh Carolina and Any Time You Need a Friend. 

One day I asked my Dad for R50. Of course he was surprised and enquired why – especially back in the 90’s where R50 was a lot of cash! I said, “Because I’d like to buy Mariah Carey’s album.” He said yes. And that is the first album I ever bought, I think I was 10! ALLLLLLLLLL these years later, I’m thrilled to announce Mariah Carey will be playing live in concert in Cape Town. I’m so sad it’s at the stadium as the sound is absolutely awful there, which is a pity considering her voice is the most important thing. None the less, here’s everything you need to know:
