Blog Meetup at The Odyssey

Last Wednesday night I ended up at a blogger event at the Odyssey. That doesn’t sound too unusual or interesting, except that I gatecrashed the event! :O  Here’s what happened…

I was invited to the opening of Mulberry & Prince. I was delighted to find a number of really lovely bloggers, the kind I want to run into and have a chat and a toot with. This includes the InstaEats boys, Mr Cape Town, Cape Town My Love and Tails of a Mermaid. They’re all really lovely people and you should totally check out their projects.

We had a snack or two at M&P, it seems like a nice place but then there wasn’t too much else to  do so it was time to go. A few others had an engagement at The Odyssey and said we should tag along. Initially I said no as I thought it would be weird to just pitch up, but after assuring me it was really informal we decided to tag along.

I’ve been to Odyssey once before and have been nagging Mr John to go there with me, which he hasn’t wanted to do! So when we tagged along, I was secretly happy! We met a few others in the upstairs bar, including I Love Foodies, My City By Night, Campsbay Girl and The Lawry.

More and more people started to arrive and I got a sinking feeling! Was I sitting in someone else’s chair?! The stress was setting in! What if we were asked to leave? SO Awkward! The hostess, Chelsea, welcomed everyone and explained that we would be doing a tasting and were welcome to cocktails and wine.

This made me feel even WORSE and everyone said it would be fine but felt TOO bad to let it go! So I followed Chelsea downstairs and confessed that we had gate crashed! LUCKILY for me, Chelsea was SO lovely and didn’t mind that we had tagged along at all. I was SO relieved because I really didn’t want to be kicked out after enjoying the night out with people who are passionate about the same things as me! But, now that I knew I could relax, we had an event better time!

The food at the Odyssey is really good and we enjoyed a sample of a number of items. I LOVE the zucchini fries there and was happy to see them again!

For the first time I tried “the veggie” which was, basically, a raviolo. It was DIVINE! Soft pasta filled with butternut, feta, mushrooms with peas and beautiful olive oil. It was really, really good. Keen for that again!

The other stand out dish for me was the mushroom polenta “bites” they call it, open sandwiches I call it 😉 I’ve had these before and I really do love them.

Other snacks on the evening included the sliders, marinated olives and chilli poppers, which were SPICEY! WOAW! One of the guests had FOUR!

These salads looked really good and I had one saved in front of me but it disappeared before I could get to it! I’m so sorry as it really does look divine. Camembert was also available but I missed that too! Mr John loved the potato skins! Says they’re the best he’s had in Cape Town and can’t wait to go back!

It was lovely to get to know Karlin from Campsbay Girl and Mike (the Lawry) better. I’ve seen there work for a while and it was great to get to know the people behind the talent. There was also entertainment on the evening, which I enjoyed as I didn’t have to compete with it. I hate it when I go to a restaurant and you can’t talk because the music takes over the whole night! I don’t think restaurants should ever be concert venues. The music this evening was really enjoyable though.

Finally we had some creme brulee. The flavour was excellent but it wasn’t set at all, which was a pity. The Odyssey Restaurant - Boring Cape Town Chick14
