After writing a love letter to my original GHD, I’ve been using my new GHD Platinum. It’s a great tool and has a few upgrades compared to the original styler. These upgrades include:
- Digital on button, not a switch.
- Smoother exterior design, all in one segment.
- Swivel cord so if you’re curling it doesn’t get super tangled.
- Silicone cover to slip over hot plates once finished using.
It definitely makes your hair look amazing leaving it super shiny and natural. I wouldn’t say it’s faster than the original styler but it’s pleasant looking upgrade. But…
BUT…
There’s one major design floor that absolutely does my head in…the body cover.
Let me explain…
GHD Platinum Hair Damage
While this new GHD does work really well, it’s CONSTANTLY pulling my hair out. Every, single time I GHD my hair, I have hair that gets caught in the body handle plates and it snaps, strips and pulls my hair out.
Considering this is a R3200 hair “care” product, it’s quite tough to be ok with this.
Scientifically, I’m assuming the handle has these splits for contraction and expansion. It is a heat driven product, which means that plastic or plate may need to expand or contract during use.
However, on the original GHD these body plates were a lot lower, meaning, not aligned with the heat plates so your hair couldn’t get stuck.
The Platinum version, however, has the body plates and heat plates aligned, creating a gap where the hair falls in, gets stuck and ultimately pulled out my head!

Use It Better
“Why not use less hair per straightening segment?” You might ask.
Because these machines are designed for every day users. They’re designed to be used at home, by amateurs, so my hair straightening technique shouldn’t be impacting the results. (Unless you do something totally stupid, which I’m not.)
In the same way they control the heat so that you don’t burn your hair off. It’s meant to be designed for dummies.
GHD 4 VS GHD Platinum
Since experiencing this issue, I tried to log back onto the GHD website to update my review (which I left 2 weeks after buying) and they’ve removed the product. And my profile! Although I hadn’t written a complaint, it seems if you had reviewed the Platinum, they’ve just removed it and have, seemingly, updated the GHD for the Platinum +.
While I guess it’s their perogative to control their brand, it seems a bit of a dodgy thing to have done. People have the right to read reviews if they want to purchase something second hand, etc.
None the less, should you be looking into buying this GHD, it’s a great product – bar this one design flaw.
Have you had this issue as well? Please do let me know!
Oh no!! I was planning to get one before my birthday. I have thick curly hair and Dyson air wrap didn’t help with my freeze so I decided to go for ghd platinum+! Are there any better options you could suggest please?? 🫠
I haven’t ever bought one ever again 🙁
OMG I really wish I had seen this issue before buying it, as it is the exact reason why I stopped using my previous straightener. I had no idea that the GHD would end up doing the same thing. When I contacted customer support, they asked me to fill out a form, pay for the shipping, and offered to replace it under warranty. However, this won’t do any good since it seems that all the straighteners are prone to the same issue. I am very disappointed, given the high cost of the product.
This happens to me too!! It only recently started doing it though as when I first got the straighteners they were fine 🤷🏻♀️ it’s a shame because other than this issue, they are really good 👀
Yes I had exactly this issue with the hair catching in these grooves. It’s got progressively worse over the last few months, so I’ve returned them to John Lewis. My original GHD’s are much better as they don’t have the groove. I noted today that ALL new GHD’s have this groove. Sadly, my love affair with the brand is now over! I also heard today that Cloud Nine is owned by the guy who originally set up GHD. I’ve only heard great things about this brand!
So unfortunate. I’ve allowed my hair to go natural now so I’m barely GHDing anymore but thanks for letting me know about Cloud 9. Maybe he took all the good quality with him!!
I’ve got a new pair of platinum ghds replacing my old faithfuls. I feel reassured that it’s not just me having this issue but I think I’ll send them back unfortunately!
Not alone out there gal!
I’m very disappointed in my GHD tropic sky.A red light goes on and it beeps endlessly. It does not heat up.I hardly used it.Still looks new.I upgraded to this styler as my old GHD was a bit outdated. At least that one is still working.
Very disappointing Jenny. My stylist 4 is still better than the platinum…but I hardly use them any more anyway.
I have the same issue with pulling hair with GHD platinum +. I’ve also noticed tiny scratches on the plates after 2nd use and only saw this by accident when I picked out my hair that got stuck in the plates. How can I now proof it wasn’t me that scratched it? I treated it like a baby, and still do after weeks. Not impressed with this product at all. The saddest part is, it took me 10years to finally afford a GHD… 🙁
Hi meg the exact same thing is happening to me with the ghd platinum, i decided to google this to see if its just me, when I stumbled upon ur blog, I have decided to take them back to the hairdressers were hubby bought them for xmas & explain whats happening but hubby has no receipt but I shall try anyway.
Good luck Susan! I doubt they will refund you for a badly designed machine, only if it’s faulty is my thinking.
Let me know what happens in the end! I hope you come right 🙂
I have today sent mine back under warranty for that exact same reason
They asked us to register our devices on their site and then removed all those registrations so when I wanted to complain about it, magically, my device was just gone from their site and there was nothing I could do. Needless to say, I’ve going Curly Girl Method and haven’t GHD’s my hair in a year so welakapela GHD!
