Fun news! Cape Town’s premier electronics and gaming expo (EGE) heads to the Cape Town Convention Center at the end of July for a weekend of games, games, games! With the explosion of the gaming market across the globe, gaming has changed from a niche hobby enjoyed by a few “geeks” to a mainstream phenomenon and a bigger industry than both music and movies worldwide. (Are you playing Pokemon Go? I am! More about that later though…)
What To Expect
At the end of July, the EGE intends to bring something for everyone, from a gaming and electronics expo, namely new games to try and buy, live tech demos to competitions, even a chance to get to play some state of the arty virtual reality games.
There will also be several big gaming retailers and distributors on the floor selling all the latest software, hardware and peripherals so expo goers are sure to snag a bargain. There will also be an area setup for table top games as well if the more “unplugged” version of gaming is more your thing.
The Artists Alley and Crafts Marketplace will again give a chance for smaller vendors and artists to show off their wares and some gaming and geek culture merchandise.
Gaming
A big addition to EGE this year is the EGE LAN. We will be organising a dedicated space at the expo for 400 gamers to play to their hearts content on lightning fast internet from Friday till Sunday – over 50 hours! Ticket space for this is limited to just 400 tickets which are already selling fast, so if you’re interested make sure not to miss out and get your ticket from Computicket.
Perhaps the most exciting piece of EGE 2016 is the massively expanded eSports Arena where some of the best gamers across South Africa will be competing across various different games for thousands of Rands in prize money. In fact the winners of one of the competitions for a game called Counterstrike will be jetting off to Paris Games Week to compete in the Electronic Sports World Cup.
Spectators will be able to watch all the games live throughout the weekend and the Counterstrike finals will be hosted in a 500 seat auditorium for everyone to see the best in the country do their thing.
Main Stage
This year the expo is very excited about their main stage which, throughout the weekend, will play host to several demonstrations as well as discussion panels hosting subject matter experts from various areas of the gaming community such as YouTubers, professional gamers, game developers, designers, eSports commentators and various others.
CosPlay
You can’t have a gaming expo without cosplay and EGE is celebrating gamers’ love for dressing up as their favourite characters by hosting a cosplay competition throughout the weekend with R5000 up for grabs as well as numerous spot prizes. After what I saw at FanCon, I’m sure this will be incredible! Good luck to everyone participating.
EGE 2016 is set to be the biggest and best gaming expo Cape Town has ever hosted. There’s something for everyone at EGE 2016 and I’m excited to see what’s in store. I’m not a big gamer, but you know I love digital so I’m really keen to check it out.
