Skateboarding: Kimberley Diamond Cup 2014

Hello from overcast but hot London! While I’ve been side tracked having a lovely European holiday, I’m back this week and thought I’d better fill you in on the Kimberley Cup which is coming up in the first weekend of October. And this year the women will be competition too!

The Kimberley Cup is hosted by the World Skateboarding Grand Prix (WSGP) and takes places in Kimberly. It includes runs skate clinics, pro demos, autograph signings and awesome gigs featuring Lil John, Lochnville, DJ Fresh and Prime Circle. So you better TURN DOWN FOR WHAT! 😉 This year will include the Women’s Street Championships ($15 000 prize) with the competition grand prize being over $500 000!

CEO of World Skateboarding Grand Prix, Tim McFerran, adds, “We were looking at ways to improve the event and the one thing we felt was missing was a Women’s Street Championship…we couldn’t have a true world championship event without including a women’s contest. It’s going to be an incredible contest and one we feel is especially important in South Africa, where there are so many girls who have taken up skateboarding and who need just as many, if not more, opportunities than boys. For them to see women competing at such a high level, we hope will serve to further encourage and inspire girls across South Africa and around the world.”

The Official 2014 KDC events are:

  • Men’s Street World Championships ($100,000 cash prize)
  • Men’s Vert World Championships ($60,000 cash prize)
  • Best Trick Contest
  • Women’s Street World Championships ($15,000 cash prize)
  • South African Street Championships
  • Rider Cup Team Skateboarding Championships

Kimberley Cup 2014

Let’s not forget the diversity of the Northern Cape with it’s 6 national parks (2 bordering Namibia and Botswana), Kimberley’s Big Hole (where the Cullinan Diamond (in the Queen of England’s crown) was found), quad-biking, ghost trails, Namaqualand wild flowers, star-gazing, the Orange and the Vall rivers in 3 deserts! Can you say ROADTRIP! I think it’s time to explore the Northern Cape!

There’s be work shops in small towns including Springbok, Postmasburg and Kimberley. As someone who has travelled in the Northern Cape countless times, these workshops are really important and gives an opportunity for kids in small towns to focus their energy and aspire to greater heights through sport.
