On Sunday I felt like eating ALL the things. It was a peaceful day and I just felt like enjoying beautiful food, but couldn’t quite make up my mind. I then recalled the Vineyard also does a high tea so I gave them a ring to see what time their tea hours ran from. Luckily, they don’t take bookings so I was just able to pop in at any time. I rang my Mom and we put on our moderate bests (it’s not a ball after all) and popped down.
Parking at the Vineyard is a joy and the outside tea area is gorgeous. When I arrived I breathed in the heavy air, thick with fresh oxygen and I looked over the rolling green lawns and lush green trees. As I was about to sit down I spotted a giant tortoise and rushed over! Our server told us that they live on the premises, what a joy!
I ordered black rooibos and my Mom had a cappuccino. They say it’s one cup of tea or coffee, but they actually bring you a pot so you can have about 3 cups of tea. Coffee, unfortunately, is just one cup’s worth.
We ordered the high tea which is R155. Our server recommended that we shared it as most people do well to split one instead of ordering their own. By the end of the tea I was full, but I am probably greedy enough to order one for myself. If there was such a thing, I think it would be more accurate to call it a morning tea. The traditional sandwiches are the first course with some deep fried savories like a samosa and spring roll. The second level is a traditional scone with strawberry jam, cream, butter and cheese for those looking for a South African twist. The third level is the baked goods, with a gorgeous blue cheesecake which was YUM, a chocolate tart (proper chocolate so you get that nice, slightly sour kick), something much like a lemon polenta type cake (very crumbly) and a red velvet cupcake which was my least favourite.
After lunch we decided to explore the grounds because they really are so beautiful. I will let the pictures do the talking…
Sky falling…
It was so beautiful feeling so far away but being so close to home. I literally day dreamt about the beautiful surroundings all of Monday and Tuesday (and a bit of Wednesday!). I can’t wait to return. I think I’ll be making the Vineyard a stable location this summer as it is too convenient and beautiful.
