Once upon a time there was a guy named Dom. He has a friend called Dave, who he started a band with. A band with guitars and drums? Not quite. This was a band with a double bass and a sax. One day Johnny Clegg was looking for a pianist and saxophonist. He rang up Dom to ask if he was available, but Dom had a new band and a really big hunch. So he replied, “Give Dan Shout a ring.” Dan and Dom went to UCT jazz school together. And that’s how my brother ended up playing for Johnny Clegg for 7 years and the reason why I will always support Goldfish. 😀
As it were, the hunch Dom had led to one of South Africa’s biggest electronic house music exports GOLDFISH! After travelling the world to residencies in Ibiza, Goldfish return home to rock the summer at their legendary Submerged Sundays, this summer residency hosted by premier beach club, Shimmy Beach for ten exclusive events.
Classically trained Jazz musicians David Poole and Dominic Peters infuse live instruments with dance beats, creating a celebrated combination of live organic and electronic music in the same vein as electronic legendary acts Groove Armada and Avicii. Dominic Peters comments,
“It’s all about live instruments. Dave plays the saxophone and flute while I play electric double bass and keyboards. We mix this with dance beats, remix our tracks on the fly… basically we go nuts for the duration of the show… people have called us the re-invention of the DJ, which is a pretty apt description.”
Shimmy Beach Club balances the style of international party life and the laid-back atmosphere of Cape Town, making it a stylish venue to rival Ibiza’s beach club scenes. Goldfish will be joined each week by a line up of international as well as top South African DJ’s with the opening night featuring German dance sensation Stimming, at Shimmy Beach Club.
