HSBC Rugby SVNS Cape Town Review

The HSBC Rugby SVNS event in Cape Town, held this past summer (9th and 10th of December 2023), was a spectacular celebration of sport and culture, attracting thousands of fans for a weekend filled with excitement both on and off the pitch.

Even for those who weren’t die-hard rugby fans, the event proved to be a massive party that seamlessly blended quick rugby sevens matches with an immersive festival atmosphere, making it a must-attend event in the city’s social calendar.

The Tournament

The tournament featured the top 12 men’s and women’s rugby sevens teams from around the world, delivering high-octane performances that kept me and the crowd on the edge of our seats.
South Africa’s teams had mixed results.

The men’s and women’s teams had challenging runs and showed commendable effort, but were ultimately unable to make it to the finals. Despite these outcomes, the local teams’ participation and support of the home crowd added to a bouncing atmosphere.

The women’s final saw Australia clinch their first-ever title in Cape Town with a dramatic 29-26 win over France, while Argentina dominated the men’s final, defeating Australia 45-12 to secure their first Cape Town title.

The Arena

But the HSBC SVNS event was more than just rugby. The DHL Stadium was transformed into a festival-like hive, buzzing with activities. There was truly something for everyone, with live music performances from over 40 artists, including our favourite amapiano and afro-house artist – DJ Zinhle.

These energised the crowd and ensured that even those that weren’t glued to the action had something to watch. The event also featured diverse food markets showcasing global as well as local cuisines, fitness challenges, and dance sessions, creating an atmosphere that was as much about celebration as it was about competition.

The Host City

Cape Town’s reputation as a premier destination for sports, food and entertainment has been further cemented by the success of this event. The beautiful backdrop of the Mother City framed an unforgettable experience for all attendees.

The integration of rugby with lifestyle and entertainment elements demonstrated the city’s ability to host world-class events that attract a global audience.

Looking Forward

For residents of Cape Town and visitors alike, the HSBC SVNS offered a perfect blend of competitive sport and cultural festivities, proving that even if you’re not a rugby aficionado, the event’s atmosphere and activities make it a highly recommended experience.

As Cape Town prepares to welcome the HSBC SVNS again this December, anticipation is already building for another round of world-class rugby and unparalleled entertainment you don’t want to miss.
