[PICS] Greg’s Souvlaki Greek Take out in Newlands!

Greg's Souvlaki, Newlands, Cape TownGreg’s Souvlaki Greek Take Out has come to town! SO often I feel like Greek food but I live in the Southern suburbs and can’t be bothered to drive to Spiro’s in Houtbay or Maria’s in town for a little tasty Greek treat. So when I noticed Greg’s Souvlaki under the Newlands Spur at the end of last year, I was intrigues yet totally forgot about the place.

So yesterday on my way home, I thought, “Arg! I really feel like some rosemary, garlic, lemon, yoghurt, lamb, Greek goodness but WHERE can I get some?!” I decided to hit good ol’ fashion Google in the hopes there would be somewhere in Wynberg or Rylands, SOMEWHERE! When Greg’s Souvlaki popped up. It said 4 Main Road, Newlands and I thought, “where’s that?” So I gave them a ring and spoke to a very friendly lady explaining they were under the Spur! The penny dropped.

It’s a small cafe styled take away (with tables outside) that offers a basic menu. Souvlaki is the name of the game, which are basically kebabs. They had a choice of 4 meats: chicken, lamb, beef or “sausage”! You can get a stick which is a souvlaki on half a pita with no trimmings or the full house, like I had, which includes salad, tzatziki and a single souvlaki. Double souvlakis are also available and now that I’ve tasted it – I’ll definitely get one next time!

The menu is really reasonably priced (I ordered one full house and one stick) at R55. They have Greek yoghurt, honey and nuts as a dessert as well as treats like dolmades, baklava and REAL Greek salad which the lady explained as NO lettuce in it (green peppers, olives, feta, onion, tomatoes) if it’s authentic.

I will definitely be popping by Greg’s Souvlaki again in the near future. They grill the meat, fresh, in front of you. The pitas were soft and flavourful. My ONLY complaint is that I definitely would have had a little more rosemary aromatics…not that I’m going to tell Greeks how to make Greek! But it is a stereotype that is loved the world over.

Check out Greg’s Souvlaki underneath the Newlands Spur. Park opposite the brewery or around the corners from Butlers. It’s well worth the visit if you’re looking for fast, delicious, non-deep fried dinners. Give them a ring on 021 686 3618.

P.S The lady told me they’re not on Facebook/Twitter/website but if you like original, home made, small town, old school food, then this is the place for you. The lady said you can order ahead, they’ll make it & she’ll run out to your car LOL I love it!
