I wasn’t too much in a rush to hear the new Van Coke Kartel Energie EP today (as I’ve been super busy at work), but I thought, “Ag I’ll just watch the first short video…” For all the hours of our lives that we have lost watching YouTube, I should have known better. I’ve really loved hearing what they’ve got to say about the covers they’ve chosen. This is the order I watched them in. Take a look:
VCK’s new offering, ENERGIE, is a fun filled homage to their varied influences. This EP consists entirely of covers, some more expected than others, like the album’s name sake ENERGIE, by Johannes Kerkorrel & Die Gereformeerde Blues Band, HELP! by The Beatles and GOT TO GIVE IT UP by Thin Lizzy, as well as atypical renditions of Lana Del Rey’s BORN TO DIE and the James Brown classic I GOT YOU (I FEEL GOOD). A digital download of the entire EP is available upon purchase. On vinyl it is pressed on ruby red wax, spins at 45RPM and exemplifies their role as one of South Africa’s most exciting rock & roll acts.
