[WIN] Franschhoek Cap Classique and Champagne Festival 2016

I wanted to start this blog post saying, “I’ve never actually been a really big sparkling wine lover”, but then I realised it was a bit of a lie. We used to drink 5th Avenue in the middle of the desert all through my years in Namibia, with a touch of Peche Royale once I got to South Africa. LOL! I have to laugh now at those bubbles because I’ve learnt SO much more since those humble days, and really appreciate what Methode Cap Classique and ‘real’ champagne means within the ‘foodie’ industry. Which is also why I’m keen to share the Franschhoek Cap Classique and Champagne Festival with you.

What’s With Sparkling Wine?

For those of you who aren’t aware, there are 3 main things you need to know about sparkling wine.

1. Champagne Comes from France

Unless you’re drinking sparkling wine that’s ACTUALLY from champagne, then you can’t call it champagne – hence the term sparkling wine.

2. Carbonated VS Organic

There are 2 ways to get sparkling wine. Some companies use CO2 to add the bubbles – exactly like Sodastream. They take the ‘wine’ and then force bubbles into it, just like soft drinks or sparkling water. Other companies rely on natural bubbles to form within the liquid – all by itself! As the liquid ferments, so are bubbles released into the liquid. This style of getting bubbles into the liquid is known as the Method Cap Classique in South Africa. Check the labels, the bottles will always tell you which is which.

3. Is it Delicious?

You decide. I think it’s ridiculous that people have to pretend they like certain liquids because of prestige. For example, I’m not mad about many Bruts because they are so super dry. I really don’t enjoy drinking them. I also get an instant headache from most sparkling wines. I LOVE Villiera Traditional Brut as I can enjoy a whole bottle (don’t judge me!) and it’s from right here in the Western Cape! Perfection.
